Creepiest of all the Toys

Charlie Ho-Tep is one of the Toys of Power used in the Devil's Playhouse, giving the user the ability to throw their voice into any being or vessel. Charlie is not only sentient, but also the main villain of Beyond the Alley of the Dolls. He is also a toy Maximus used in The Tomb of Sammun-Mak.

[edit] Character Detail

Back when Junior owned the Devil's Toybox, Charlie Ho-Tep was played with for less than an hour before he was discarded on account of creepiness. Charlie grew bitterly jealous and sought to gain back Junior's favor by summoning him into our dimension. He eventually brought about his own end by accidentally destroying the Devil's Toybox. Charlie claims unprovoked at one point that he is not illiterate, suggesting that he might actually suffer from this condition.

In The Tomb of Sammun-Mak (the movie), Charlie is used as a play doll by Nefertiti. She has a crush on him, which may or may not confirm her knowledge of his sentientity. Sameth & Maximus successfully rob her of Charlie, and later use it in the third reel. It is also used in the fourth reel to trick Papierwaite into summoning Yog-Soggoth, but the plan failed (even though it saved Sam and Max).

What Charlie did from then up until Beyond the Alley of the Dolls is unknown, though it is quite likely that it was placed in The Devil's Toybox seeing as how Sameth and Maximus gave it to the Mole People below their office to guard. How it escaped the toybox if this is true is unknown.

In Beyond the Alley of the Dolls, Charlie anonymously convinced/payed Momma Bosco to help him create a massive army of Sam Clones in the Cloning Chamber so they could search for the Toys of Power. Charlie is then picked up by Sam and Max to use as a tool to help them. Eventually, Charlie is revealed to have brainwashed Stinky and Sal (both of which were in a relationship) into maintaining his Cloning Chamber. Then he tried to return Junior -- the elder god that could destroy all of Earth -- back to the world while above the Statue of Liberty (while Sam, Yog-Soggoth and Papierwaite were all captive). Charlie, angered by how Norrington taunted him by claiming he was hated by Junior, shot and destroyed Norrington with the Cthonic Destroyer which destroys anything from the Dark Dimension.

However, with his last inch of a life, Norrington unlocked Max's true psychic potential and gave him the ability to levitate and implent special upgrades to his powers. He eventually tricked Charlie into using the Cthonic Destroyer to destroy the Devil's Toybox; this destroyed him, and ultimately foiled his scheme. Also, Yog-Soggoth (possibly from the fact that he is one with Papierwaite) survived the attack.

It should be noted that Max's brain (as a terrorizing elder god) used ventrilioqist powers extremely similar to Charlie's against Sam in The City that Dares Not Sleep.
