Sam & Max Wiki:User groups

From Sam & Max Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Different users have access to different functions of the site. This is handled through user groups, described below.

Contents

[edit] Anonymous users

This group consists of users who aren't logged in or haven't made an account (yet). Anonymous users can edit most pages and create new ones. Note that anyone can see the IP address of "anonymous" users, arguably rather limiting the anonymity.

[edit] Registered users

Registered users have the following additional abilities anonymous users don't have:

  • Marking edits as minor.
  • Moving pages.
  • Uploading files.
  • Editing semi-protected pages (after being auto-confirmed).

Also, registered users can set various personal options through "my preferences" and be recognized as the same person when editing from different places (or even the same place; who memorizes IP adresses, really?)

[edit] Administrators

Administrators have a bunch of extra responsibilities and privileges, including all of the following:

  • Blocking users, and one-click rollback of undesirable edits.
  • Deleting and undeleting pages, page histories, and uploaded files.
  • Editing pages in the MediaWiki: namespace, which are about the interface and design of the wiki.
  • Locking (and unlocking) pages, and editing locked pages directly.

The current administrators are David, Harald B, TheHighway & SuperbowserX. More may be appointed when the need arises, and this will probably be announced somewhere. Otherwise, please don't ask for admin powers.

Administrators should not use their administrator powers to settle editing disputes; for example, to lock a page on a version he or she prefers in an editing dispute that isn't vandalism. Administrator powers should be used to help keep the wiki clear of vandalism, spam, and users who make malicious edits, but not for simple disagreements between users acting in good faith. Ideally an admin shouldn't be considered "in charge". The ideal admin is just someone who is trusted to have a few extra buttons and to use them for the benefit of the wiki community.

[edit] Bureaucrats

Bureaucrats have the ability to manage user rights. In particular, they can appoint and demote administrators. The current bureaucrats are David and Harald B. We're a small wiki, so we probably won't need another bureaucrat unless someone leaves.
