[edit] Synopsis

After discovering a pair of skeletons that look like them at the end of The Penal Zone, Sam & Max also find a projector and four film reels nearby. The skeletons turn out to belong to their great-grandfathers Sameth and Maximus; they use the projector and reels, which somehow show their ancestors' last escapade. (Other than to switch between reels, players control Sameth and Maximus for the entire episode. The reels are not actually played through chronologically.)

  • Reel 1: In the year 1901, Sameth & Maximus visit a show hosted by Mr Papierwaite. After recovering a can that is a Toy of Power (which Maximus can also use) and beating Papierwaite's special challenge before competitor Nicholas St. Kringle does, Papierwaite trusts them with a special challenge: they are to travel to the Tomb of Sammun-Mak in Egypt and bring back The Devil's Toybox for him.
  • Reel 2, part a: While on their way to Egypt on the Disorient Express, Sameth and Maximus discover they have a stowaway: Baby Amelia Earhart. Then they lose their tickets just as a conductor comes around to check them. They avoid trouble by making Amelia shut up and hiding in the can.
  • Reel 2, part b: Sameth & Maximus arrive at the Tomb, where they get past curses and the molemen guarding it to collect the Toybox. While doing so they also meet Jurgen, still alive at this point, who was after the Toybox himself but flees once they free him from being stuck on a wall. They also collect another Toy of Power: a dummy that lets Maximus engage in psychic-boosted ventriloquism.
  • Reel 3: After getting past Kringle waiting for them at the Tomb exit, Sameth and Maximus are on the Disorient Express again, headed back home. Then they notice that the Toybox is gone, stolen by someone on board. They manage to search the luggage of Kringle, his elves, the molemen (who decided to move to America) and Jurgen (for which they have to turn him into a vampire), all without finding it. Then it turns out that Baby Amelia Earhart is the one who took it. They get it back after an anticlimactic showdown.

Sam asks Max not to start the final reel until he returns from an ill-timed bathroom break, but Max starts it anyway.

  • Reel 4: Back at Papierwaite's place, Sameth & Maximus tell him and his audience how they managed to succeed. Then Papierwaite turns on them, capturing Sameth to force Maximus to summon Yog Soggoth using the Devil's Toybox. They manage to trick him into saying the final words himself. After a big magical blast, Papierwaite is gone and everything seems normal.
Afterwards they visit the molemen, who have taken up residence in the boiler room. They give them the Toybox and promise to have their (future) children use the office upstairs. When the molemen add an extra layer of protection, Sameth and Maximus get caught up in the magic and get turned to the skeletons seen in the present.

Sam now returns from the break, now seeing that not only is the last reel done, but someone has stolen Max's brain!
